In a recent update we have added a new &#8216;Convert Images&#8217; action that allows easily converting images between different formats. You can add this action by clicking the white plus in the top-left of the Dropzone grid and choosing &#8216;Convert Images&#8217; from the Built-in Actions section.

This will bring up the action configuration where you can set the output format and destination folder:

The action will then be added into your Dropzone grid:

You can then drop images onto the action in your grid and they will be converted to the chosen output format.



Convert images is a Dropzone 4 Pro action, although you can still try this out for free in the trial version of Dropzone 4 Pro. The convert images action is available in version 4.80.21 and later.

Easily convert images between different formats with Dropzone 4

YouTube has made it increasingly difficult to download H.264 encoded versions of videos. This has caused issues for some Dropzone 4 <a href="https://aptonic.com/actions/YouTube%20Downloader" data-type="link" data-id="https://aptonic.com/actions/YouTube%20Downloader">YouTube Downloader action</a> users, as you can’t directly play the downloaded videos using QuickTime or Quick Look since they are encoded with the VP9 codec, which macOS doesn’t natively support. To play VP9 encoded videos, you need to download a player that supports the VP9 codec, such as <a href="https://www.videolan.org/" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.videolan.org/">VLC.</a> There are other disadvantages to VP9 encoded videos on macOS as well—for example, you can’t directly use the downloaded videos in Mac apps like Final Cut Pro.



We have implemented a solution in Dropzone 4 that allows you to automatically download and convert YouTube videos to the H.264 codec, making them fully compatible with macOS built-in codecs. This option can be easily enabled by right-clicking on the YouTube Downloader action in your Dropzone 4 grid and checking the ‘Convert to H.264 codec after download’ checkbox, as shown below:

The only downside to this is that you have to wait a little longer for the conversion process after the download, although on most modern Macs, this usually doesn&#8217;t take too long. We&#8217;ve made this an option so that you can decide if the extra wait time for conversion is worth it for your use case. Conversion to H.264 is disabled by default currently.



You will need to make sure you&#8217;re running Dropzone 4.80.18 or later and version 3.2 or later of the YouTube Downloader action for this option to be available. You can install the latest version of the YouTube Downloader action from <a href="https://aptonic.com/actions/YouTube%20Downloader">this page.</a> You can check you&#8217;re on the latest Dropzone version by going to the Dropzone Settings and then going to the updates tab. The YouTube Downloader action is only available for the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 4 downloaded directly from <a href="https://aptonic.com">our website</a> or in the <a href="https://setapp.com/apps/dropzone" data-type="link" data-id="https://setapp.com/apps/dropzone">Setapp version.</a>

Auto convert videos downloaded with the Dropzone YouTube Downloader action to H.264

ScreenSnapAI is a tool that uses the latest in AI technology to process screenshots and images. The brand new icon for ScreenSnapAI is above and was designed by the talented <a href="https://www.matthewskiles.com">Matthew Skiles.</a>



It&#8217;s easiest to show you how it works, so here&#8217;s a 1 minute demo:

The app has already undergone several major updates in response to beta testing feedback and has rapidly evolved into a powerful tool that allows you to have conversations with AI about anything on your screen.



You can trigger the ScreenSnapAI assistant via a hotkey set in the app settings or through the menu, as shown below:

When you activate ScreenSnapAI, it will allow you to select a screen area, and then you can choose an AI task to perform. You can also enter your own custom task.



As an example, let&#8217;s say I want to translate some Japanese text in an image to English. I simply drag over the text and choose &#8216;Translate to English&#8217;:

ScreenSnapAI will then work its magic and begin a chat about the screenshot, presenting the result in a message. The image is automatically added to the conversation, and you can continue to ask the AI questions about it. This is a fantastic way to start a conversation with AI about anything you have on your screen.

Whenever you capture images with ScreenSnapAI, it will generate an AI name, keyword, and description for you, making it easy to find screenshots later. You can find these details in the Image tab:

Now, Dropzone has a Short.io action that allows you to easily shorten links using Short.io from anywhere on your Mac. Here&#8217;s a quick demo:

Once you have configured API Key and domain you can shorten URLs by selecting a URL anywhere on your Mac, right-clicking it and choosing &#8216;Run Dropzone Action&#8217; from the Services menu. The Dropzone grid will open and then you can click on the Short.io action to shorten the URL. You can also select a URL anywhere on your Mac and press Ctrl+Option+Cmd+D.

Short.io URL Shortener action now available for Dropzone 4

After listening to user feedback on Drop Bar we have added some new features to Dropzone 4 that we think you&#8217;ll find super useful.



Rename Stacks



You can now name stacks in Drop Bar. Just right-click a stack and choose &#8216;Name Stack&#8217; from the menu or hover over a stack in Drop Bar and hit enter to assign the items in a stack a name. The name that you assign won&#8217;t impact the source files and is purely used as a labelling to help you organise things in Dropzone. 



This gives you a fantastic way to group a bunch of files for a specific project. For example, you might have some files that you know you&#8217;re going to need to finish a project and those files are scattered around different locations on the web and on your Mac and you need to collect them all into one place. Now you can just drag the files into a Drop Bar stack, assign a name and then when you&#8217;re ready either separate the stack to get the files individually or just drag the whole stack to where you need it.



Reorder Stacks



We have also added the ability to reorder items in Drop Bar by dragging them around inside the Dropzone grid. This feature combined with renaming takes Drop Bar to a new level. You can now easily use it as a tool to organise multiple files for multiple projects.



We have made a short video to show you how to use these two new features below:

Drop Bar improved with stack naming and reordering

Dropzone 4 has now been fully updated for macOS Sonoma. You will likely notice a few cosmetic changes that have been happening in the app as well.



When you click the menu item to open the Dropzone grid it will now show a highlight around it like other toggled menu items:

There&#8217;s also a right-click menu that has been added into the menu item. It only has Settings for now but we may add further options in here in future updates.

There&#8217;s also an often requested feature that has that has finally made it into Dropzone 4. When using the Move or Copy Files actions to move or copy a file that already existed the only options before were to replace the file or stop the operation. Now we have added in a third option to &#8216;Keep Both&#8217; which will add a numeric suffix to the file. This brings the handling for existing files inline with how you&#8217;re used to it working in the Finder.

Dropzone 4 – Updated for macOS Sonoma

Today I want to show you how to setup and use an action for Dropzone 4 that allows you to download videos from YouTube.
First you&#8217;re going to need Dropzone 4 Pro. You can download this from the homepage <a href="https://aptonic.com">here.</a> This comes with a 14 day trial of Pro so you can test this out for free if you don&#8217;t have a license already. Note that you need the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 4 for this.
Once you&#8217;ve downloaded and run Dropzone you&#8217;re going to want to goto the <a href="https://aptonic.com/actions/">Dropzone add-on actions page</a> and click the &#8216;Install&#8217; button for the YouTube Downloader action as shown below:

You will be prompted to add it to the Dropzone grid. Click the &#8216;Add to Grid&#8217; button:

That&#8217;s the basic setup done. You will now have the YouTube Downloader action in your Dropzone grid. The easiest way to use it is to goto a video you want to download in your favourite browser and then right click on the URL, go into the &#8216;Services&#8217; submenu and click &#8216;Run Dropzone Action&#8217; as shown below:

How to Download YouTube videos with Dropzone 4

Following on from last weeks demo of using Dropzone in a Shortcuts workflow to take a screenshot and upload to an SFTP server, I wanted to show off another handy Shortcuts integration that Dropzone 4 now includes:

In this screencast I first give a basic overview of Drop Bar then show you how to setup a Shortcut to take a screenshot and put it in Drop Bar, ready for dragging into another app or onto a Dropzone action.
This Shortcuts action lets you add files to the Drop Bar area of Dropzone from within a Shortcut. This can be used with any Shortcuts action that outputs files.
I&#8217;ve included a screenshot of the Shortcut setup below to help you replicate this yourself:

Dropzone 4 Shortcuts Integration: Add Screenshot to Drop Bar from a Shortcut

If you haven&#8217;t tried out the new Shortcuts app that ships with macOS 12 and later then it&#8217;s well worth checking out. You can quickly build some great timesaving automations to make commonly performed tasks faster and easier.
Below is a video showing how to setup a Shortcut that takes an interactive screenshot and uploads it to an SFTP server and then puts the resulting URL on the clipboard. It also shows you how you can trigger the Shortcut from within Dropzone using the &#8216;Run Shortcut&#8217; action:

Note that you need the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 4 to add the Shortcut into the Dropzone grid due to sandboxing restrictions.
As shown in the video above, the new Dropzone Shortcut actions allow you trigger Dropzone grid actions from within a Shortcut and add some great extra functionality (such as sharing files with services that aren&#8217;t natively provided by Shortcuts). You can run any action in your Dropzone grid via Shortcuts and pass along files or text to use when running a Dropzone grid action.
All of the available Dropzone Shortcut actions are shown below:

You can preconfigure different Dropzone actions in your Dropzone grid (such as different SFTP or Amazon S3 servers for example) and then run the appropriate Dropzone action from a Shortcut using the above Shortcut actions.

Dropzone 3 does still continue to receive occasional bug fix updates but the development focus has now shifted to Dropzone 4 so it is highly recommended that you upgrade.

Dropzone 4 Drop Bar adds Quick Look support

Dropzone 4 now includes a Resize Images action which allows you to resize and convert images between different formats and also change the JPG compression amount. This action is great for preparing images for emailing or for uploading to a website.

I wanted to give you a brief update on the latest Dropzone developments. 
The newest update (version 4.1.7) is out now and provides preliminary macOS Monterey support and also brings a new action for you to try out if you happen to be testing out the macOS Monterey beta.
As you may know the Shortcuts app is coming to macOS in the next version of macOS and there are some awesome new workflows possible. It&#8217;s definitely shaping up to be a fantastic upgrade from Automator.
Apple have also done a great job of making Shortcuts extensible for developers and so I&#8217;ve been looking at how Dropzone can take advantage of these new APIs. 
To begin with I have added a new action that allows you to easily run Shortcuts from the Dropzone grid. If you&#8217;re running Dropzone 4 under Monterey then this new action will appear in your Dropzone add actions menu. Note that this action currently also requires the non-Mac App Store or Setapp version of Dropzone.
This is just the beginning and I have much deeper integration planned (such as the ability to run Dropzone actions from within a Shortcuts workflow) but in the meantime, make sure you update to 4.1.7 and keep the feedback coming!

Dropzone 4 – Getting ready for macOS Monterey

I&#8217;m thrilled to announce another big Dropzone 4 update. Dropzone now fully supports Apple Silicon and the new M1 MacBooks and Mac Minis and will run natively without requiring the use of Rosetta. The app icon has been refined as above and the app has been made to look and feel like it fits in with the new Big Sur design language.

I was excited to test out Big Sur and see how fast Dropzone would compile on the new M1 hardware. I use a 13-inch 2020 MacBook Pro (1.4GHz i5) as my main development machine and the M1 MacBook air is over 60% faster at compiling Dropzone. I have posted the results below. It&#8217;s amazing how fast these new machines really are.

In terms of design changes Big Sur has a new translucent menu bar that changes style depending on the desktop background lightness. In this update the Dropzone 4 drag area has been made to keep its coloring consistent with the new menu bar style.

Dropzone 4.1.3 has just been released. This version adds a new &#8216;Open URL&#8217; action that allows you to add URLs to the grid for fast opening. 
I&#8217;ve recorded a quick demo video showing how to use it below:

It auto-downloads an icon for a website and it also works with file URLs such as <code>/Users/john/Documents/document.pdf</code> 
For file URLs it will even generate a quicklook preview for the file and use this as the action icon.
If you&#8217;re running the Pro version of Dropzone 4 then you can add as many Open URL shortcuts to your grid as you like. The free version is limited to one only.
This new action is available in the non-Mac App Store, App Store and direct download versions of the latest version of Dropzone 4.

It&#8217;s finally here: Today I am excited to announce the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 4.
I&#8217;ve been listening carefully to all the feedback after the initial launch of Dropzone 4 on the Mac App Store and then Setapp. 
A large amount of the feedback was around Dropzone moving to the subscription model and even though many users told me they love this, many also still wanted to be able to just pay a one off fee for Dropzone 4 rather than paying a monthly recurring fee. There were also users that were frustrated that they weren&#8217;t able to get a discount on Dropzone 4 after they purchased Dropzone 3.
This is all changing today.
Today I am launching the non-Mac App Store version which comes with two different options for upgrading to Dropzone 4 Pro:

<li>Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime: A one off purchase for $35 USD. This gives you all the Dropzone 4 Pro features without paying a recurring fee.</li>
<li>Dropzone 4 Pro Subscription: A recurring monthly fee of $1.99 USD/month. This is the same option that is currently offered in the Mac App Store version.</li>
</ul>
This new Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime purchase option gives you all the benefits of a subscription for the lifetime of Dropzone 4 but you do not have to pay any recurring monthly subscription fee. A Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime license will also include cloud features, such as cloud actions we host and update and any Pro specific features or actions we add for the lifetime of Dropzone 4.
I&#8217;ve carefully chosen the $35 USD price point for Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime to take into account the fact that there won&#8217;t be a source of recurring revenue after the initial purchase and to strike a good balance between making the business viable and not making the app prohibitively expensive. And the subscription option is also supported for non-Mac App Store users who prefer to pay a lower fee for the app on a monthly recurring basis.
And how about those discounted upgrades from Dropzone 3? This is also now an option. If you have a Dropzone 3 license you can now goto <a href="https://aptonic.com/upgrade.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this page</a>, enter your serial and get 30% off the purchase price of Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime or 10% recurring off a Dropzone 4 Pro subscription. For Dropzone 4 Pro Lifetime this works out to only $24.50 USD one time. If you went with a Dropzone 4 Pro Subscription you would pay only $1.79/month with this discount.
The other key thing with this release is that the non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 4 runs unsandboxed, so once you download this version you can now install and use all your <a href="https://aptonic.com/actions/">favourite unsandboxed actions</a> again. Today I&#8217;m thrilled to announce the release of Dropzone 4. 
Dropzone 4 is a big release not just in terms of the app itself but also the business behind it and how I plan to run Aptonic moving forward.
Over the years, I&#8217;ve learnt so much more about app development and how to run a successful software business. 
I&#8217;ve found that many of the issues with Dropzone have not been around development of the app itself but the sustainability of the business. There are so many things I have wanted to work on and improve but Dropzone has always had to remain a side project and I&#8217;ve only been able to spend a limited amount of time on it because it never quite made enough revenue to work on full time. The plan going forward is to increase the sustainability of the business so that I can spend more time building the app and shipping features, fixing bugs and helping customers.
Therefore the biggest change in this version of Dropzone is that it is transitioning to a subscription based business model. This means the base app is now totally free, but if you want to support continued development of Dropzone and use the apps premium features then it will cost $1.99 per month ($24/year). I&#8217;m hoping you&#8217;ll find the value the app delivers to your workflow easily justifies the cost of a cup of coffee each month and if successful this new model will make a world of difference to how much time I can dedicate to improving the app. Dropzone 4 is now also available on <a href="https://setapp.com/apps/dropzone">Setapp</a> so you can get it and a bunch of other fantastic apps for $9.99 per month.
So that&#8217;s the business change. Now onto more cool app stuff. As you can see above, the icon has been totally redesigned for Dropzone 4 and the Dropzone user interface has undergone a complete redesign as well.
When you drag a file in any app in Dropzone 4, a subtle overlay will appear at the top of the screen with the Dropzone 4 icon. Simply drag files onto this area to activate the grid:

This lighter styled grid fits in better with the design language of recent versions of macOS.

As well as the app redesign and business changes, Dropzone 4 is now fully compatible with macOS Catalina. Other notable changes include the Google Drive action now being built into the app as this proved to be very popular. Dropzone has also switched to using TinyURL to handle URL shortening as Goo.gl has shutdown. There are many other enhancements and I recommend downloading Dropzone 4 from either the Mac App Store or Setapp and testing it out yourself:

The non-Mac App Store (direct) version of Dropzone 4 will be coming soon. If you need to run unsandboxed Dropzone actions then I recommend that you use the Setapp version of Dropzone for the time being.

Dropzone 4 Released

So I know it has been a long time since anything has been posted here on the blog. Fear not, Dropzone has been continuing development quietly in the meantime. Recently, <a href="https://cocoadialog.com/">CocoaDialog</a> which is one of the many helper apps that Dropzone uses was throwing up a warning for about a lack of 64-bit support. CocoaDialog is used in an action when you want to prompt the user for a filename, folder name or some other info. I checked out the latest code for CocoaDialog for GitHub and went about compiling it for 64-bit but found that the project was in an sorry state indeed and nothing worked anymore. I was just considering writing my own version of it when a customer emailed to tell me how much he liked Dropzone and that he was using <a href="https://www.bluem.net/en/projects/pashua/">Pashua</a> in his own Dropzone actions.
I took a look at Pashua and found it was the perfect drop in replacement for CocoaDialog &#8211; it even has Ruby and Python bindings. So, in the latest version of Dropzone CocoaDialog has been replaced with Pashua instead.

There are many other controls you can use, such as date pickers, checkboxes, image boxes and more. And because Pashua is now included with Dropzone, all this goodness is now available out of the box. Today I&#8217;m excited to show off a new Dropzone action I&#8217;ve been working on. This action is something I&#8217;ve wanted to make for Dropzone for a long time but all the right pieces weren&#8217;t quite there until now. The final missing piece was that the Dropzone API <a href="https://github.com/aptonic/dropzone3-actions/blob/master/README.md#python-support">now supports Python</a> and the <a href="https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl">youtube-dl project</a> is written in Python so it became possible to combine the two. What results is a Dropzone action that lets you quickly and easily download videos for offline use from dozens of sites.

This update is free to all existing Dropzone 3 customers. You should be updated to this version automatically or you can force the update by going into the Updates tab in the Dropzone settings and clicking the ‘Check Now’ button.
I&#8217;ve covered what&#8217;s new in this version in detail below:
<h3>The Overlay</h3>
In this version, the way you activate Dropzone when dragging files has changed slightly. In earlier versions of Dropzone you would activate Dropzone by dragging files directly to the top of the screen. However, since OS X 10.11, Apple have made it so dragging a file to the top of the screen opens mission control &#8211; presumably so you can drag files onto a different space or fullscreen app. Unfortunately this conflicted with Dropzone so the mechanism Dropzone uses had to be changed.
In Dropzone 3.6, when you start dragging a file you&#8217;ll see an overlay appear under the Dropzone menu item and you can drag a file onto this overlay to open the Dropzone grid. This overlay has the added benefit of reminding you that Dropzone is an option when dragging a file.

The overlay has been somewhat controversial with half of customers loving it and the other half hating it. If you fall into the latter camp then there&#8217;s a hidden preference so you can disable it. If you disable it then you can instead open the grid by dragging items onto the Dropzone menu item. The downside of disabling is that the menu item provides a much smaller dragging target and is harder to hit.
In a future version of Dropzone I&#8217;m most likely going to provide a UI for this option in the Preferences and also add another option so that you can re-enable the old method of dragging to the top of the screen. This option can still work, although it&#8217;s quite easy to drag too far upwards and accidentally activate mission control.
If you prefer, you can disable the overlay opening a Terminal and copy pasting the following command:

That command will work for the non-Mac App Store version only, for the Mac App Store version the command is below:

Just change the <code>false</code> at the end of the command to <code>true</code> to re-enable it.
<h3>Locking Items in Drop Bar</h3>
Also new in this version is the option to lock items in Drop Bar so that a reference to the files remain in Drop Bar even after dragging elsewhere. This was an often requested feature &#8211; a common situation where this is useful is if you have a file that you need to regularly use like for attaching to an email. After you lock an item in Drop Bar you can just open the Dropzone grid and drag the file out whenever you need it.

To lock items in Drop Bar, just right click on a stack in Drop Bar and choose &#8216;Lock Item&#8217; from the popup menu as shown above. To unlock, right click and choose &#8216;Unlock Item&#8217;
<h3>Adding Items to Drop Bar via the API</h3>
Also new in this version is the ability to add files to Drop Bar using the Dropzone Ruby or Python API. This would be useful for an action that produces a file result, it could then place that file in Drop Bar for dragging elsewhere. The API documentation has been updated with information about how to do this <a href=" https:="" github.com="" aptonic="" dropzone3-actions="" blob="" master="" readme.md#adding-items-to-drop-bar-via-the-api"="">here.

After 8 months of intense development, I&#8217;m thrilled to announce that Dropzone 3.5 is finally here. This is a major update that takes the app to an entirely new level. The update has just been approved by Apple and is now available on the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dropzone-3/id695406827">Mac App Store</a> and also via to in-app upgrade mechanism for non-Mac App Store users. You should be notified of the update automatically shortly or you can force the update from the Updates tab in the Mac App Store app or by going into the Updates tab in the Dropzone settings and clicking the &#8216;Check Now&#8217; button if you&#8217;re using the non-Mac App Store version.

<h3>User Interface Update</h3>
The new version has a brand new icon (shown at the top of this post) that fits in better with the current flat OS X design language.
The user interface has been redesigned with the fonts, action icons and dividers updated. Also a toolbar has been added at the top of the grid. Here&#8217;s how Dropzone 3.5 looks:

In the toolbar are the buttons for adding actions, and a new button for opening and closing Drop Bar:

You can either click the button as shown in the video above or drag files onto the button to expand the Drop Bar/Add to Grid area. This allows you to keep this area of the grid hidden to save space if you&#8217;re not currently using Drop Bar.

<h3>Available Actions Highlighting</h3>
After you upgrade to Dropzone 3.5 you may find that certain actions in your grid are greyed out as shown in the screenshot below:

This is due to a change to the way action events and dragging types are handled. When you click to open the grid, only actions that support click events will be highlighted. In the screenshot above the disabled actions only support having items dragged onto them, so they are greyed out unless you actually indicate a drag by dragging files to the top of the screen or onto the Dropzone menu item. Also, when you drag a particular type (text or files) then only actions that can handle that type will be highlighted:

This makes it easier to see at a glance which actions are relevant to the current event (a click or a drag) or content type (files or text).
<a name="keyboard-shortcuts"></a>
<h3>Keyboard Shortcuts</h3>
You can now launch actions using the keyboard. This makes it faster than ever to use your actions. One way you can use this is to open a folder you use often, for example if I want to open my Downloads folder I can simply press F3 to open the Dropzone grid and then press &#8216;D&#8217; since that&#8217;s the key I have assigned to my Downloads action. The shortcut keys are shown overlaid on your actions as shown in the screenshot below:

When you upgrade to Dropzone 3.5 all your actions will be assigned shortcut keys automatically, but you can change the key assigned to an action by right clicking on an action, choosing Edit from the menu and then editing the Services Key field:

Open Terminal.app and enter the following:

Where the <code>&lt;number&gt;</code> is the position on the icon as follows:

<h3>OS X Service Integration</h3>
You can now perform Dropzone actions on files and text using only the keyboard. This can be used as an alternative to dragging files or text onto the grid. This is implemented using a new system wide OS X &#8216;Run Dropzone Action&#8217; service. To run a Dropzone action on a particular file or files, select the files in the Finder and use the default Dropzone services shortcut which is Ctrl+Option+Cmd+D. You can also activate the service from the menu as shown in the screenshot below:

This will cause the Dropzone grid to popup and ask which action you&#8217;d like to use with the selected items. You can then hit the key shown in the overlay for the service you want:

You can also use the OS X service integration to run a Dropzone action on some text. To do this you can select some text in an app such as Safari and then press the Ctrl+Option+Cmd+D shortcut (or right click on the selected text and choose &#8216;Run Dropzone Action&#8217; from the right click Services menu). This will open the Dropzone grid and any grid actions that can handle text will be shown highlighted in the grid. For example, you could select some text and then have it read aloud using the optionally installed <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions/install.php?bundle_name=Say%20Text">Say Text</a> action.
<a name="googl-url-shortening"></a>
<h3>Built in Goo.gl URL Shortening</h3>
Dropzone now allows you to shorten URLs using a dedicated OS X service shortcut. Simply select some text that is a URL in any app and press Ctrl+Option+Cmd+S. You can also right click on some text and choose &#8216;Shorten URL&#8217; from the Services menu as shown in the screenshot below. URLs are shortened using the free Goo.gl URL shortening service and the resulting short URL is placed on the clipboard.

If you want to keep track of shortened URLs using the <a href="https://goo.gl/">Goo.gl</a> web interface with your Google account then you should add a Shorten URL action to your grid by clicking the white plus icon in the top left of the grid and choosing the &#8216;Shorten URL&#8217; action. This will show the below window:

You should click the Authorize button to link your Google account with Dropzone. After doing this the Shorten URL service will add shortened URLs with your Google account and you can track URLs and visits etc. using the Goo.gl shortener interface at <a href="https://goo.gl/">Goo.gl.</a>

Dropzone 3 featured in the Mac App Store Get Productive sale

Here at Aptonic I&#8217;ve been busy getting Dropzone 3 working well under Yosemite and making sure all the actions are working correctly. A big update has just been released (version 3.2.3) via Sparkle for the non-Mac App Store version. The update has also been submitted for Mac App Store review and will be available for update on the Mac App Store shortly. Yosemite is now fully supported in this version.
There&#8217;s also a great new feature added in Dropzone 3.2.3 that allows you to open the Dropzone grid by dragging files to the top of the screen. This is huge usability win &#8211; I&#8217;ve made a short video to show you:

Dropzone 3.2.3 Released and a New Feature Demo

Wanted to let you know about some new actions and action updates released recently for Dropzone 3.
<h3>Google Drive</h3>

<h3>Google Image Search</h3>

The idea for this action came from a customer on the <a href="https://aptonic.com/forum/topic/102/googles-search-by-image-destination/">Aptonic forums.</a> You can drop and image on it and then it shows the Google Image search results for that image in your browser. You can also drop multiple files on it and the search results will open in separate tabs.

<h3>Send iMessage With Attachment to Phone Number</h3>

This one was another great idea from a customer. The use case was a father who wanted to send pictures regularly of his son to a particular phone number (his grandparents) using iMessage. After you add this action to your grid, drag a file onto it and it will prompt you for the phone number (which is then saved) &#8211; you can also have multiple instances of the action with different phone numbers and you can send multiple files with it at once.

<h3>Zip Files</h3>

<h3>Print (Updated and Improved)</h3>

This action has always been a bit troublesome. At the start I developed it to be a really quick and dirty way to print a file and it originally only supported printing image and PDF files but many people requested support for more file formats (Especially MS Office docs). I originally did a bit of a hack to make Word/Excel/PPT docs print &#8211; they used to be rendered by capturing and printing the QuickLook preview so the formatting tended to be pretty terrible. I&#8217;ve now updated this action to actually open the appropriate MS Office app (such as MS Word), tell it to print using AppleScript and then close. This seems to be working better.

Twitpic will be <a href="http://blog.twitpic.com/2014/09/twitpic-is-shutting-down/">shutting down September 25th</a> so the TwitPic action has been removed from the <a href="https://aptonic.com/actions/">main actions list</a> and will no longer work after this date. Fortunately there are many other alternatives such as the built in Imgur action Dropzone 3 ships with or the <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions/install.php?bundle_name=ImageShack">ImageShack</a> action.

Today I&#8217;m thrilled to announce the launch of Dropzone 3. This is an update two years in the making and is the biggest update to Dropzone ever.

<h3>Redesigned Grid</h3>
First of all, the grid has been totally redesigned. As you can see below, it has been split up into 4 different sections. There&#8217;s now a FOLDERS / APPS section an ACTIONS section and a TASK PROGRESS section as well as Add to Grid and Drop Bar at the top.

<h3>Updated Preferences</h3>
The preferences have been simplified. If you&#8217;re a Dropzone 2 user, you will notice that the &#8216;Destinations&#8217; tab has gone. This is because adding, removing editing and rearranging actions is all now done directly in the grid. A new &#8216;Toggle grid&#8217; shortcut key as been added. This can be used system wide to open and close the grid and is especially useful when you need to drag to the grid from a fullscreen app where the menu bar is hidden.

A new &#8216;User Actions&#8217; tab has been added. This shows the actions that you currently have installed. If you want to create your own modified action based on an existing action you can click the &#8216;Copy &amp; Edit&#8217; button. You can also delete actions you&#8217;re no longer using and reveal an action dzbundle folder in the Finder. Reveal can be useful if you want to make a copy of the dzbundle for distribution or if you want to modify an action bundle directly. There&#8217;s also a new &#8216;Check for Updates&#8217; button in the bottom left, clicking this does a check to see if there are any newer versions of your actions available to install. Dropzone can now download and install the updated versions for you automatically. Note that auto-updating of actions is currently not available in the Mac App Store version due to app store rules.
The updates tab is for controlling sparkle updater preferences and in the license tab you can register with your serial number or purchase a license for Dropzone 3. Note that the Updates and License tab are not shown in the app store version of the app as updates and licensing are managed through the app store.
<h3>Quick Install Actions</h3>
The currently available actions for Dropzone 3 can be installed from <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions">https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions</a>
In Dropzone 2, you had to download and install actions manually but in Dropzone 3 you can simply click the &#8216;Install&#8217; link underneath the action you want to install and the action will be automatically downloaded and installed as show below:

This is achieved using the new URL scheme which allows any action in the <a href="https://github.com/aptonic/dropzone3-actions">GitHub user actions</a> repository to be installed by visiting the URL dropzone://action where action is the name of the action you want to install. For example visiting the URL <a href="dropzone://Print">dropzone://Print</a> would quick install the Print action (as long as you have Dropzone 3 installed).
<h3>Imgur Image Sharing</h3>

Dropzone 3 comes with a new built-in action for sharing images with <a href="http://imgur.com/">Imgur</a> &#8211; a popular image sharing service. You can use this action to share images anonymously or by linking to your Imgur account. To use it, simply drop a single image or multiple images onto the Imgur action in your grid. If you drop a single image then the image is uploaded and the URL is placed on the clipboard. If you drop multiple images then you&#8217;ll be asked to enter an album name and the images will be uploaded to that album and the album URL will be placed on the clipboard. There&#8217;s complete instructions and a demo of this <a href="http://imgur.com/gallery/eDf31">here.</a>
<h3>Drop Bar</h3>
If you&#8217;ve used Yoink, DragThing, DragonDrop or Dropshelf then you&#8217;ll understand how to use Drop Bar. It provides a temporary holding area to store files you know you&#8217;ll want to use later. Here&#8217;s a short video showing Drop Bar in action:

Here are some example situations where Drop Bar can come in handy:
1) You want to gather several files that are in different locations into a group and then copy them to a particular folder. Normally you would need to create a temporary folder to store the files, but using Drop Bar you can simply drag each file onto a Drop Bar stack and then drag the stack either onto a Dropzone 3 action or onto another folder or app.
2) You want to gather certain images from a website or from several websites. You can drag each image from your web browser onto the Dropzone 3 menu item and then onto a Drop Bar stack and then drag this stack of files to where you want them.
3) You have an app open (e.g. iPhone or iTunes) in fullscreen mode and want to move certain files to a folder in Finder. You can find each file and then drag it onto Drop Bar (press F3 to activate Dropzone 3 when in fullscreen apps) and then drag the Drop Bar stacks off into the Finder folder to copy the files. This is quicker and easier than activating exposé and trying to find the correct window to drag to for each item.
Note that when you drag files onto Drop Bar, it simply creates a reference to that file &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t copy or move it from it&#8217;s original location or do anything with it until you drag it off Drop Bar. Therefore you need to keep the original file around even after dragging it onto Drop Bar. Some users have requested that Drop Bar have an option to take its own copy of a dragged files so that the original item can be trashed afterwards. I am considering adding an option for this in a future version.
<h3>Action Right-click Menus</h3>
This seems like a small thing but it actually turns out to be a huge win in terms of usability. In Dropzone 2 if you wanted to change an actions settings you had to first open the preferences and then find the action you wanted to edit in a list. Now it&#8217;s much simpler &#8211; you can simply right click on an action in your grid to show a popup menu and then click edit.

The right-click menu also allows you to remove actions, reveal folders in the Finder and even develop new actions based on already existing actions by using the &#8216;Copy and Edit Script&#8217; option.
The right-click menu serves another purpose as well. If there&#8217;s a problem with an action (such as a missing folder or invalid metadata) then the action will show at a lower opacity with a question mark over it. If this happens, you can right click on the action to see what the issue is:

<h3>Circles</h3>
The Circles feature from Dropzone 2 has been removed for now. This was mostly due to time constraints, but also because there were some very conflicting views from customers on Circles. Many people disliked them and disabled them immediately but just as many loved the feature and are disappointed it&#8217;s gone. They had some difficult technical and UX issues, such as accidental activation if your mouse got to close to the edge of the screen and a lot of difficult issues in dual monitor configurations. Personally I find them useful but they are also a huge nuisance to maintain from a technical perspective. For now, if you really still want them, you can run both Dropzone 2 and Dropzone 3 at the same time without ill effects &#8211; this is what I&#8217;m doing currently. It&#8217;s reasonably likely I&#8217;ll end up re-adding them in some shape or form in a future update.
<h3>Sandboxing</h3>
There are two slightly different versions of Dropzone 3 available &#8211; The Mac App Store version which runs sandboxed and the non-Mac App Store version which runs unsandboxed. Sandboxing is now required for all apps distributed via the Mac App Store and it places limits on what an app can do. Sandboxed apps can only write to certain folders and can&#8217;t use AppleScript as well as several other restrictions.
The two versions of Dropzone 3 will work the same out of the box and sandboxing only becomes an issue when installing certain add-on actions for Dropzone 3. If you&#8217;re using the Mac App Store version of Dropzone 3 then initially you&#8217;re limited to installing the actions listed on <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions/mas">this page.</a> If using the non-Mac App Store version then you can install the full list of actions <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/actions/">shown here.</a> If you purchased Dropzone 3 from the Mac App Store and want to use an action that is not compatible with sandboxing then I have provided an easy solution: You can switch to the non-Mac App Store version by downloading it from <a href="https://aptonic.com/dropzone3/latest">here</a> and moving it to your applications folder replacing your existing App Store version. When you run it, it will detect you purchased already on the Mac App Store and register you automatically. Full details on this process are given <a href="https://aptonic.com/sandboxing.php">here.</a> Note that you have to run the Mac App Store version at least once first for this transition to work. Therefore it doesn&#8217;t matter if you purchase Dropzone 3 from the Mac App Store or direct from us. You can easily switch between the two versions if you need to.
<h3>Upgrade Pricing</h3>
If you have a Dropzone 2 serial then you&#8217;re eligible for a half price upgrade (only $5) to Dropzone 3 from our <a href="http://sites.fastspring.com/aptonicsoftware/product/dropzone3options">online store</a>. Just make sure you select the &#8216;Dropzone 3 Upgrade Pricing&#8217; option during checkout. I&#8217;m also offering a half price discount on the Mac App Store during the first few weeks after launch to give users who purchased Dropzone 2 in the Mac App Store an opportunity to upgrade to Dropzone 3. Beyond this few week window I&#8217;m unfortunately not able to provide App Store purchasers of Dropzone 2 a discounted upgrade as the Mac App Store does not support upgrade pricing. Although if you purchased Dropzone 2 in the past few months then by all means <a href="mailto:support@aptonic.com">email me</a> and I&#8217;m sure we can work something out.
<h3>More Coming Soon</h3>
As well as the new features, lots has changed behind the scenes as well &#8211; Dropzone 3 now uses FMDB with a SQLite database instead of Core Data and the codebase has been updated to use ARC. If you don&#8217;t know what any of this means, don&#8217;t worry &#8211; the end result for you will be a faster, more stable app that receives frequent updates. I&#8217;m really excited about the future of Dropzone and am looking forward to sharing many new actions and features with you in the coming months.

Dropzone 3 Launched

A few weeks ago I attended Apples World Wide Developer conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. I can honestly say it was the most amazing experience of my life. I met many amazing people and came back totally reinspired and full of new ideas for advancing Dropzone.
At WWDC, Apple announced <a href="http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/">OS X Mavericks</a> (OS X 10.9) and provided developers with a beta version of the OS. Apparently Apple has run out of cats to name OS X after and will instead name future OS X releases after famous locations around California. They are starting with Mavericks which is a famous surfing beach.
Since I was actually in California for the conference, me and a friend rented a car and drove from San Francisco down to Mavericks to see what the fuss was about. I&#8217;ve included a map below to show where Mavericks is &#8211; it&#8217;s about a half hours drive south from downtown San Francisco.

Based on Apples marketing images <a href="http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/">for Mavericks</a>, we were hoping to see some pretty sweet surfing waves coloured the perfect hue of deep blue and green:

Although Mavericks was a perfectly nice beach it wasn&#8217;t so different from the many other beaches I&#8217;ve visited. It was rather overcast when we arrived and there was lots of seaweed. Apparently the big surfing waves actually break about half a mile offshore and then only in the Winter when the conditions are just right. Our hopes of sighting a Mavericks wave of Apple marketing proportions were soon dashed. Ah well.
So, now that I&#8217;ve travelled to Mavericks &#8211; it&#8217;s time to make Dropzone support it (a whole lot less fun, I can assure you). Although Mavericks is still far from the final consumer version, I&#8217;ve just released an update (Dropzone 2.8) that adds preliminary support. The OS is still under heavy development so it&#8217;s possible that more issues will arise in Dropzone in future Mavericks betas. As of Developer Preview 5 though, Dropzone is working well.
If you&#8217;re running the non-Mac App Store version, you can click on the Updates tab in the Dropzone preferences and then click the &#8216;Check Now&#8217; button to upgrade:

If you&#8217;re on the Mac App Store version &#8211; I have submitted 2.8 to the Mac App Store for review and it should be available in a week or two. You will be able to update from the Updates tab in Mac App Store app when the update is approved if you&#8217;re on this version. This update also works great on OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and you should still upgrade if you&#8217;re not running Mavericks as there are other general bugfixes in this version.
Update: Dropzone 2.8 is now available on the Mac App Store.

WWDC Awesome… And Dropzone updated to support OS X Mavericks

Dropzone 2.6 has just been released via the Mac App Store and is also available for direct download customers. This version includes several visual tweaks including a shiny new Circles design. If using the Mac App Store version you can update from the Updates tab of the App Store app. If using the direct version you can update from the Updates tab in the Dropzone Preferences.
Also new in this version is the ability to specify a specific Amazon S3 folder inside a bucket to upload to. You can set this up when adding or editing a Amazon S3 destination (see below).

An issue with Amazon S3 uploading has also been resolved where uploading a file with the same name caused the original to be overwritten. Files with the same name are now given a -1 -2 -3 suffix. The other major issue addressed in this update is a problem where Dropzone would cause Macbook Pros with both integrated and discrete graphics systems to always use the discrete graphics which resulted in shortened battery life. This issue is now resolved and now only integrated graphics is required for Dropzone.
This is a free update for all existing Dropzone customers.

Dropzone 2.6 Released

Announcing Tweetifier

On Tuesday, I participated in <a href="http://twodollartues.com">Two Dollar Tuesday.</a> 
<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/littlefinllc">Mike Dattolo</a> from <a href="http://www.littlefin.com/">LittleFin</a> emailed me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to participate. He plans to run Two Dollar Tuesday as a regular weekly promotion. One of his own apps, <a href="http://www.littlefin.com/compartments.html">Compartments</a> would be participating in the bundle as well along with <a href="http://www.apparentsoft.com/socialite">Socialite.</a> The idea was that Dropzone and these two apps would be discounted to $2 for one day only. The individual developers would simply reduce the prices of their apps to $2 in the Mac App Store for Tuesday only and we would keep all the proceeds.
I was totally unsure whether to participate. Dropzone normally sells for $14 and I was uncertain whether offering such a large discount was a good idea. I worried about a few things: That it would reduce the perceived value of my app, that it would upset other customers who missed the discount and that the support burden would be too high.
In the end I flipped a coin and decided to go for it. The results of the promotion have blown me away. So much so that I&#8217;ve decided to share the actual sales numbers with you all, but first lets take a look at what happened to my ranking in the App Store. Before the feature, my ranking in the Productivity category (U.S store) was averaging around 170 and I was not showing at all in the top paid apps category of the store. On the day of the sale I was propelled into the top 3, not just in the productivity category, but in the top paid apps overall:

People tell me that Dropzone was even beating pages and was second only to Lion for a short while. Unfortunately I did not get a screenshot of this. In Germany I even beat Lion and was the #1 selling app overall.
I have shown sales for the 19th, 20th and 21st to give you a rough idea of how many I was selling at the normal price of $14. There was a little bit of overlap with the 21st (maybe a few hours) as Mike had us set our prices well in advance so that from the start of the 22nd all three apps would be selling for $2. That is why the 21st is quite a bit higher.

As you can see, I sold over 6700 copies as a result of the sale. I have never before sold any amount close to this much before. When Apple featured me on the front page of the App Store I sold around 300 copies (that was at the old price of $14).
Lets see what this works works out to in terms of actual revenue:

So I made over $8000 US after Apples 30% cut has been subtracted. This is beyond my wildest dreams of what I expected to make.
A lot of this was due to the efforts of <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/littlefinllc">Mike Dattolo</a> who did a fantastic job contacting bloggers and marketing the special. It was promoted on <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/22/3035940/dropzone-os-x-sale-good-deal">The Verge,</a> <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5912447/daily-app-deals-get-dropzone-for-mac-for-2-in-todays-app-deals">Lifehacker</a> and a number of other sites. You should check out his <a href="http://www.littlefin.com/compartments.html">Compartments app,</a> and I highly recommend participating in his promotion if you&#8217;re asked.

My Sales from Two Dollar Tuesday

There are quite a few improvements in this version which I&#8217;ve covered in detail below:
Circle Labels
Circles now show labels beside them on mouseover or when dragging something onto them. This was an often requested feature. 
The main issue here was that if you had two destinations with the same icon (e.g. two folders) then you couldn&#8217;t tell which was which. Now you you just brush the mouse over them and the labels are shown. Originally I had the labels always visible but found it looked rather messy. I think the mouseover is an acceptable tradeoff between function and aesthetics. This is how the OS X dock works as well.

If you&#8217;d rather not have these labels, there&#8217;s hidden default to disable them. Open Terminal, paste in the following and then relaunch Dropzone:

TwitPic OAuth

The TwitPic destination stopped working fairly recently as TwitPic switched off support for username/password authentication and began using OAuth. I&#8217;ve now rewritten this destination to support this and bundled it with Dropzone so you no longer need to install it separately. To use this new destination simply go into the Preferences -> Add and then select TwitPic from the action drop down. You will then be directed to the Twitter website and asked to authorize TwitPic with Twitter.

When you click &#8216;Authorize app&#8217; you&#8217;ll be given a pin code to paste into Dropzone to complete the authorization. You can then upload images to TwitPic with Dropzone.
Adjust the Circles activation delay
In some cases, users were finding that they accidentally activated Circles and that it was to sensitive. In 2.3 I&#8217;ve added a hidden default so you can tweak the activation delay:
To adjust the delay, Open Terminal, paste in the following and then relaunch Dropzone (you must relaunch Dropzone each time you make a change):

The delay before the half circle fades in is given in seconds and 0.3 is the default. The above line would increase it to 1 second and decrease the likelihood of accidental activation.
If you want the default delay back you can use the following line:

Dropzone API Improvements
This stuff below here will only be relevant for developers writing destinations for Dropzone. There are two new <a href="http://aptonic.com/api/index.html#optionsnibs">OptionsNIBs</a> available in Dropzone 2.3. One is for an API key and the other is for a Username+API key which some web services require.
The API Key OptionsNIB can be used by including the below line in your destination meta data:

Dropzone 2.3 Now Available on the Mac App Store

Until now, Dropzone 2 was only available via the Mac App Store. There were many reasons for this &#8211; and I explained why I made this decision in detail <a href="http://aptonic.com/blog/mac-app-store-upgrade/">here.</a>
This created an unfortunate situation for users who purchased the earlier (0.6 version) of the app as there was no way for me to transition these users to the Mac App Store (although I did give out promo codes to anyone who asked)
I&#8217;ve since decided that making Dropzone available exclusively on the Mac App Store was the wrong decision and have now decided to distribute Dropzone 2 outside of the Mac App Store as well. Therefore, I&#8217;m pleased to announce that the Non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone 2 is <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone/latest">now available.</a>
The first thing this means is that if you have an 0.6 license (purchased or via a bundle) you can <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone/latest">download Dropzone 2</a> and use this license key to register and upgrade for free. 
If you&#8217;re considering purchasing Dropzone you now have two options &#8211; you can purchase <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dropzone/id464733615?ls=1&#038;mt=12">via the Mac App Store</a> or directly from us by <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone/latest">downloading the free trial</a> and then purchasing via the in-app FastSpring store.

As shown above, in the Non-Mac App Store version of Dropzone there are two new buttons &#8211; &#8216;Updates&#8217; and &#8216;License&#8217; &#8211; In the Updates panel you can control Sparkle updater settings and in the License panel you can enter your registration details or purchase the app. 
Note the &#8216;Show Beta versions&#8217; checkbox. If you tick this you will receive beta updates as well as normal updates. In the past I distributed beta versions of Dropzone manually which was cumbersome and time consuming, this feature will help me to catch bugs earlier and allow a faster release cycle. If you&#8217;d like to receive the latest and greatest version of Dropzone and don&#8217;t mind reporting the occasional bug, please tick this checkbox.
Note that if you&#8217;ve purchased via the Mac App Store this doesn&#8217;t effect you at all. You should continue to use that version and you will continue to receive updates via the App Store app.

Apple featured Dropzone on the frontpage of the App Store worldwide for a week and the app made it into the top 10 productivity apps in most countries, including the US store.
This was a dream come true for me. There&#8217;s so many talented developers competing for attention on the App Store and for Apple to show Dropzone in the most prominent position available is really exciting.

Many new customers discovered Dropzone and I received an overwhelming amount of feedback. One thing is clear &#8211; Everyone loves Circles!
Most of the requests I received were for more Circles and the ability to move the Circles between the left and the right of the screen. Dropzone 2.1 has just been approved by Apple and adds both of these. You can now add an extra Circle and there&#8217;s an option to choose which side of the screen Circles should be on as well.

We&#8217;ve put together an <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone2/">HTML5 demo</a> of circles for you to checkout. It allows you to see Circles in action and shows some of the new features of Dropzone 2.

Dropzone 2.0 Launched

As you&#8217;ve probably seen, releasing Dropzone exclusively on the Mac App Store has <a href="http://aptonic.com/blog/dropzone-1-0-now-available-on-the-mac-app-store/#comments">generated some controversy.</a>
Here are the main concerns customers have. I&#8217;ll do my best to answer them:
Why is Dropzone 1.0 only available on the Mac App Store? I purchased the non-Mac App Store version and I should be entitled to a free upgrade:
Yes. I would agree and normally be happy to offer this. I always intended to offer a free upgrade to 1.0 for users who purchased the earlier version. Unfortunately the Mac App Store doesn&#8217;t provide me with any way to accomplish this. Apple give out 50 promo codes per version of my app, most of which got used up in the first few days for reviewers and giveaways. I also gave away about 25 codes to people who had bought the pre-Mac App Store version in the last few weeks.
OK, fine. So why won&#8217;t you release Dropzone 1.0 via sparkle and then I can upgrade for free like that instead of purchasing again on the Mac App Store?
Unfortunately I had to modify Dropzone significantly so it would pass through Apples app review process and 1.0 works a bit differently from the original version. It now resides in the menu bar instead of the dock. Some users prefer the app in the dock and I don&#8217;t want to release an update that significantly changes the core function of the app, which would definitely upset some users.
OK, so then make the upgrade an optional download and then users can decide whether they want to upgrade or not&#8230;
Yes, I could do this. The issue with this is that the Mac App Store version and the original version use completely different licensing systems. When I began work on the Mac App Store version I stripped out all the registration and licensing code used in the original. To release the Mac App Store version I would have to add all this licensing code back in and then maintain 3 completely different versions of the app, the Mac App Store version, the non-Mac App Store 1.0 version and the original dock based version. That&#8217;s a large amount of effort for questionable payoff. I feel that this time could be better spent adding new features or improving the existing version of the app.
But can&#8217;t you use separate Xcode build targets to automate the three different build targets and automatically produce non-MAS and MAS compatible versions?
Yes, in theory and this is what many developers are doing to produce a MAS and non-MAS compatible binary. I&#8217;ve started going down this path with <a href="http://frenzyapp.com/">another one of my apps</a> and it&#8217;s really pretty messy, I have to have a lot of macros in the code to do stuff like remove this &#8216;Purchase&#8230;&#8217; menu item if this is the non-MAS version, don&#8217;t include this registration NIB if this is the MAS version etc. I can&#8217;t bring myself to mess up the MAS version of the app with all this after stripping all the registration stuff and I would still have to maintain the original dock based version of the app in a separate Xcode project as it is so radically different to the menu item based version.
This is your own fault for moving onto the app store. If it creates this many problems for developers and users then why even move to the store in the first place?
When the Mac App Store was introduced I saw a significant decline in sales and many people emailed me asking when Dropzone would be available on the Mac App Store. I was making almost no sales of the original app and could no longer afford to spend time developing it. I needed a way to get back in the game. I watched many developers re-launch their apps on the Mac App Store and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/wilshipley/status/23894557854797824">exclaim</a> that their sales were higher than they had ever been. It became clear that I needed to make my app available on the store, or cease development of the app altogether.
What about offering a limited time discount on the Mac App Store so that users of the original app can upgrade at reduced cost?
I wish I&#8217;d thought of this. It&#8217;s a good idea. Users would still complain, but maybe not to this degree. If I drop the price now then users who have already purchased on the Mac App Store would be upset. But also bear in mind that Apple is taking a 30% cut of sales, so if I priced even lower I wouldn&#8217;t make very much.
Let me also say, I&#8217;m not entirely in disagreement with those who are upset. I&#8217;ve been on the user end of this mess as well. I&#8217;ve had to repurchase many apps myself that I had already purchased outside the store. I wasn&#8217;t thrilled about it but I did it. Unfortunately the nature of the Mac App Store rules have lead to a situation that is less than ideal for upgrading customers. You have to keep in mind that there are many positive things to be said about the app store as well. Apples review process boosts the overall quality of apps, users can easily use their apps across multiple Macs and don&#8217;t have to worry as much about security and malware and the store also allows users to find great apps more easily.
As I have said, I will still update and maintain the original version of the app and I&#8217;m truly sorry that this update has caused upset for many of my customers.

Mac App Store upgrade issues

The wonderful <a href="http://brettterpstra.com/">Brett Terpstra</a> has created a <a href="http://aptonic.com/getdestination.php?name=Open%20URLS.dropzone">neat little Dropzone destination.</a> He describes it as follows:
This destination will accept input from dropped text, dropped text files or from the clipboard (if it&#8217;s clicked directly). It scans for http(s) urls in the content and opens them in the default browser for the system.
It&#8217;s great if you keep browsing &#8220;sessions&#8221; in text notes, or use something like <a href="http://brettterpstra.com/tablinks-safari-extension/">TabLinks</a> or <a href="http://brettterpstra.com/eversave-revisited-now-with-session-restore/">EverSave</a> when browsing. It also works well when someone sends you an email full of links that you want to open all at once.
Just drag one or more text files to the destination, or select and drag a block of text to it. If you click the icon without dragging, it will scan your clipboard for links instead.
I&#8217;ve tried it out and it&#8217;s pretty awesome. I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll use it often when someone sends me an email that has a bunch of links I need to check out. I simply select the email text, copy it and click on Open URLs in the Dropzone grid. All the URLs get automatically extracted from the email and are now opening in my browser. Really cool.

New Dropzone destination: Open URLs

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dropzone 1.0 is now available on the Mac App Store.
This new version is <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dropzone/id464733615?ls=1&#038;mt=12">available now</a> for $14. You will notice that Dropzone 1.0 is a little different from the old version of Dropzone. Instead of residing in the dock, the new version is contained in a menu item in the OS X status bar.

While I still plan to support the old, dock based version of Dropzone, moving forward I will be focussing development efforts on the Mac App Store version.

Dropzone 1.0 now available on the Mac App Store

Dropzone 0.6 has now been released and fixes the issues with the ImageShack and TwitPic destinations. You do not need to re-install these destinations, just updating Dropzone by right clicking on the dock icon and doing &#8216;Check for updates&#8230;&#8217; will be sufficient.

Dropzone 0.6 Released

Dropzone has just been updated. This update contains the following fixes:

The Imageshack &#038; TwitPic destinations still have issues due to changes in the APIs. We will have updates for these destinations out shortly.
Our other app, <a href="http://frenzyapp.com">Frenzy</a> has also been updated and is now fully compatible with Lion as well.

Dropzone 0.5 Released – Now Fully Lion Compatible

Today I have two exciting pieces of news.
The first things is, Dropzone has finally been updated. The update is mostly bug fixes, but there are a couple of new things as well.
Moving files with Dropzone is now much faster, and a short delay before the grid opens has been added as many users (including myself) were finding that they were accidentally activating Dropzone when they really meant to drag a file to the trash. The share text destination has also been fixed.
If you want to tweak the delay before the grid opens when dragging, a hidden default has been added. You can adjust it by opening a Terminal and typing the following:

killall "Dropzone Helper" 
</code>
You then need to right click on the Dropzone dock icon, click &#8216;Quit Dropzone&#8217; and then click the dock icon again to relaunch the helper and the main app. 
The delay is in seconds and the default is 0.25.
The second piece of news is that I have finished my second app &#8211; Frenzy. The reason Dropzone has not been updated until now is I have been focusing completely on building this.

Dropzone 0.4 Released

We&#8217;ve just pushed out Dropzone 0.3.3.
This version includes a <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone/sparkle/releasenotes/0.3.3.html">boatload of bugfixes,</a> but also a couple of new features.
Most significantly, we have majorly improved and revamped the Install Application destination so it can handle more situations and added support for dragging items from iTunes.
So right click on the Dropzone dock icon and click &#8216;Check for updates&#8230;&#8217; now.

Dropzone 0.3.3 Released

How do you use Dropzone?

In earlier Dropzone versions, you could only perform one action at a time. e.g. if you were uploading a picture to TwitPic, then you couldn&#8217;t use the grid to launch an application or upload a different file to Flickr at the same time. You had to wait until the other task finished. This was a pain.
So, we went and added multitasking support, and while we were at it, greatly improved the task status window user interface.
New tasks get added to the bottom of the stack, and when a task finishes, the tasks below it slide up. So you can now run as many tasks as you like.
The other cool thing is that the destination icon is now shown beside each task so you can easily tell which task is which.
I think after trying it, you&#8217;ll agree that this takes the app to a whole new level.
We&#8217;ve also redone the Recent URLs feature. It stores the last 15 URLs, remembers them between launches and you can still access the list even when Dropzone is closed.
We&#8217;ve also fixed a bunch of bugs and made <a href="https://dropzone.lighthouseapp.com/projects/27262/tickets/84-destinations-need-to-be-able-to-handle-both-nsstringpboardtype-and-nsfilenamespboardtype">some</a> <a href="https://dropzone.lighthouseapp.com/projects/27262-dropzone/tickets/89-need-alternative-to-dzurl-that-allows-a-text-string-to-be-copied-to-the-clipboard-without-url-encoding#ticket-89-3">enhancements</a> to the API for destination developers. 
 
IMPORTANT: We have discovered a bug in our auto-updating system that will prevent existing users from automatically upgrading to 0.3.2. So you will need to uninstall your current version and install the new one manually. This is not as painful as it sounds, to uninstall Dropzone, simply drag it out of your dock. A dialog box will pop up, click &#8216;Uninstall Dropzone&#8217; and it will be removed from your system.
Then download Dropzone 0.3.2 from <a href="http://aptonic.com/releases/Dropzone-0.3.2.zip">here.</a> Unzip it and double click on Dropzone.app. You do not need to move it to your applications folder, as Dropzone will do this for you. Your destinations database and registration info will be preserved.

Dropzone 0.3.1 Released

After two months of solid development. Dropzone 0.3.0 is finally ready for release.

This is a big update, and although only a couple of new features have been added, lots of work has been done behind the scenes to make Dropzone more usable. 
All the grid rendering code has been redone from scratch to be faster and smoother, and also, you can now resize the grid icons, which is especially useful on smaller screens where you don&#8217;t want the grid taking up so much space. We&#8217;ve also added an SCP upload destination which lets you easily upload files via SSH thanks to the work of <a href="http://antiframeworks.com/">Peder Olsen. </a>

We&#8217;ve just pushed Dropzone 0.2.9 via Sparkle. It fixes a bunch of bugs and adds several cool new features:
First of all, Dropzone&#8217;s Install Application destination now supports zip files. So you can drag a zip file containing an application onto your grid and Dropzone will extract it, move the application to your applications folder, run it and trash the zip for you.
But the other really neat thing is that you can now open dmg and zip files directly with Dropzone without even using the grid.
You can set this up in Firefox by selecting Dropzone as your &#8216;Open with&#8217; application once and it will remember to open dmg files with Dropzone in future.
If you&#8217;re installing an application from a zip file like say, <a href="http://www.delicious-monster.com/">Delicious Library</a> for example, you can right click on the file and then use Finders &#8216;Open With&#8217; menu to install the application inside.

Another thing, if you&#8217;re feeling brave, you can set Dropzone as the default application to handle all dmgs on your Mac. You can set this up by right clicking on a dmg, selecting &#8216;Get Info&#8217;, and then selecting Dropzone from the &#8216;Open With&#8217; Drop down menu and clicking &#8216;Change All&#8230;&#8217;

If you happen to open a dmg that doesn&#8217;t contain an application, Dropzone will still mount the disk image as normal and show you the contents, so you can use it as a drop in replacement for the default DiskImageMounter.
The other new feature in 0.2.9 is Dropbox support, but we&#8217;ll talk more about that in a later post.

We&#8217;ve just added a bit.ly URL shortener destination. If you drop a URL on it, a shorter bit.ly URL will be put on your clipboard.
bit.ly is probably the best URL shortener as it lets you track how many clicks your URL has had.
As an example, here is a URL shortened with bit.ly:

To get stats on the URL, I go to:

Under my bit.ly account I can also choose whether I want stats for the URL to be public and see a listing of recently shared URLs. bit.ly can also be set to auto-tweet my URLs. Very useful.

bit.ly URL shortener destination added

We&#8217;ve just added a pretty neat destination &#8211; If you drag a file or image onto it, it immediately prints it to your default printer.
You can also drag multiple files onto it &#8211; e.g. if I want to print a bunch of text files or PDFs I just drag them onto the Print destination and they&#8217;re sent to the printer.

We&#8217;ve recently released Dropzone 0.2.7 which adds support for Snow Leopard.
If you zoom up the screenshot, you&#8217;ll see that it even uses the new Snow Leopard grid border &#8211; just like the built in Dock grids.

I’m really very proud of it, and have come to depend on it in my day to day work. Although it can take a while before it feels a natural part of your OS X workflow, once you ‘get it’ it becomes an indispensable utility, a lot like Quicksilver or TextExpander.
I see this as just a beginning, and I hope you’ll help me build on it using the <a href="http://aptonic.com/dropzone/documentation/">Dropzone scripting API.</a> Some pretty <a href="http://aptonic.com/extend.php">neat stuff</a> has already been built. I also need your feedback on how to evolve the API to make it even more useful.
There are many more features I am working on for future releases, such as SFTP, WebDAV and MobileMe support. So if you need these, rest assured they are coming soon.
