bit.ly URL shortener destination added

bit.ly

We’ve just added a bit.ly URL shortener destination. If you drop a URL on it, a shorter bit.ly URL will be put on your clipboard.

bit.ly is probably the best URL shortener as it lets you track how many clicks your URL has had.

As an example, here is a URL shortened with bit.ly:

http://bit.ly/K1t2u

To get stats on the URL, I go to:

http://bit.ly/info/K1t2u

Under my bit.ly account I can also choose whether I want stats for the URL to be public and see a listing of recently shared URLs. bit.ly can also be set to auto-tweet my URLs. Very useful.

Download the Dropzone destination script here. You need to sign up for a free bit.ly account to use it.

Thanks to Sergej Müller for contributing this!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question but, how do I drag a url to this icon? The only way I know of is to grab the favicon and drag that to the Bit.ly icon in Dropzone… which doesn’t work for me. I get an error message that says Invalid User or api key, the login is right but Im not sure what the API key is. Please Help : )

  3. Hey Steve,

First configure the bit.ly destination – you need to login to bit.ly and then goto https://bitly.com/a/your_api_key to get your username and API key. You paste these into the username and password fields when setting up the bit.ly destination in Dropzone.

Then, to use the destination you select the URL (like if it’s in your browser click in the address bar so the URL is highlighted) and then hold down the left mouse button on the now selected text. It should turn into draggable text which you can drag onto the bit.ly destination in the Dropzone grid.

The shortened URL will then be copied onto the pasteboard.
